Year 9 Maths 1

Below, I will post homework assignments, some lesson notes if necessary, and other material related to our class.

March 05, 2017 Half-Term Project
Description:
Due March 31

Options:
1. Study an area of maths using the following resources and do a test after self-guided learning
(more to be filled)
2. Math RPG
(Based on and heavily inspired by animation series RWBY, names are slightly changed)
Beat the game in the following links:
windows version

Next update should be by Mar 22.

------------------------------------------------------------
Mar. 14, 2017
What we covered in class:
- Went over your feedback
- Finish Quadratic Equations (by factorising)
- Finish Algebraic Fractions

Game update: Sorry, still needs some tweaking.  To let you in on what is coming up, according to the animation RWBY, the next big battle section is in the forest (where they get a relic), however I'm adding places where you can learn certain topics of math to help you with the game.  The game at this stage is complete but just really subpar in terms of educational value and balance.
Will aim to get the next update out within a few days.  However, teaching 7 courses (compared to just two in the first month with you guys) is really draining my time... Hope you can understand!
Hopefully the game will not disappoint!

------------------------------------------------------------
Mar. 12, 2017
Next Game update should be on Mar. 14 evening.
Sorry for the delays, I need to make sure everything works fine (difficulty, how to prevent or at least minimize cheating, bug fixes, etc) before releasing it for the project.
Project is worth quite a lot of marks and will definitely be reflected on your progress reports.

Nearpod Questions:
1. 9 + x < 10
Solution:
x < 1

2. 2x - 5 > 13

Solution:
x > 9

3. 3x - (x - 3) < 8x

Solution:
3x - x + 3 < 8x
2x + 3 < 8x
        3 < 6x
     1/2 < x
        x > 1/2

Other Links:

Homework Part 1: Finish up the three worksheets (see Jan.24 and 25 class notes) and check answers in the links. (Required)

Homework Part 2:  6 Multiple Choice Question Diagnostic Quiz on Fraction, Percentages & Decimals on show my homework. Takes around 10 minutes to complete.
(Optional, does not count towards marks, but helps me understand where you are.  If you have trouble with the topics and do not do the quiz, I would skip material based on how the rest of the class did.  Also, not doing the quiz would reflect on the show-my-homework reports as incompleted.  That would not look good on your profile.)

Due Wednesday 01/02/2017
------------------------------------------------------------
Jan. 24, 2017
What we covered today:
- Elephant and Crow problem (solution given to the crow problem)
- Review how to draw an inequality (such as x > 2) on the number line
- Review the difference between circle and solid dot ( greater vs greater than or equal to)
- Review how to solve simple linear inequalities
- Worksheets x 2

Assessment on Linear equations

Sorry, the test was fairly long and you did not have enough time!
The scores will be adjusted based on this fact.
This (will be here soon) is a copy of our assessment paper.

Last Lesson Kahoot Quiz Questions
1. -4x - 7 = -11

2. 5(x + 3) = 15

3. -3(x+2) = -3x - 6

4. 3x - 5 = -4x + 12

5. (2x-3)/4 = (x+1)/3

6. (5( 3x - 2) + 13) / 4 = 12

7. x^2 - 3x - 70 = 0

We need to work on the being silent!  Let's work together!
Check back later today or tomorrow for lesson notes.
(Jan 23: The hardcopy for the lesson notes were handed out during class)

Jan. 11, 2017
Homework Assignment
One-step simple linear equations (Optional, do these if you need extra practice on the simple equations,

Two-step linear equations (Required: all odd questions)
Multi-step linear equations (Required: all odd questions)

1. Copy the questions onto your workbook
2. Do the questions
3. Check answers and mark your work after completion.

Example of how to show work:
Steps in brackets may be skipped if you are confident with algebra

3x - 5 = 8x + 10
(3x - 5 + 5= 8x + 10 + 5)
(3x - 8x = 8x + 10 + 5 - 8x)
3x - 8x = 10 + 5
-5x = 15
(-5x/5 = 15/5)
x = -3

UK Intermediate Mathematical Challenge 1999 (You can find a scan in this link)
Will not need to be handed in, but we will spend class time going over some of these questions.

Due: Jan. 17 18, 2017 ( I just found out homework is supposed to be collected on Wednesdays, and you will get detention for not completing the homework)
Workbooks will be collected at the end of class on that day.
